Banyana Banyana delivered a dominant performance on Saturday afternoon, thrashing Malawi 3-0 in the first of two international friendlies clash at UJ Soweto Campus. The match, which served as a crucial preparation fixture ahead of the upcoming CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tournament, saw the South African side assert their class and intent with a convincing display.
The squad, announced by coach Desiree Ellis last month, came into the match with a clear winning mindset and showed Malawi that they are a team determined and ready for WAFCON. From the first whistle, Banyana controlled the tempo and looked dangerous in every attack, with goals coming through fluid team play and individual brilliance.

The encounter also held special significance as it marked the farewell game for veteran defender Noko Matlou, who officially retired from the national team after an illustrious career. Noko, who was part of the squad that secured the win over Malawi, bowed out with an incredible 174 caps for the national team, cementing her legacy as one of South Africa’s most decorated female footballers.
Nozipho Mbatha, Senior Manager: Group Brand and Sponsorship, praised the team’s efforts, stating:
“Congratulations to Banyana Banyana on a fantastic performance against Malawi. Your hard work, passion, and determination inspire a new generation of female footballers. Sasol is proud to stand with you on this journey to WAFCON; this victory is another way of demonstrating that it is possible through hard work.” We would also like to wish Noko all the best in her future endeavours she added. Noko has contributed so much to women’s football and inspired so many upcoming players. May she continue to make South Africa proud and continue to live the impossible.”

Banyana Banyana will return to action for their second friendly against Malawi on Tuesday, 8 April, at Lucas Moripe Stadium as they continue their journey of preparation for continental glory.
