Banyana Banyana played to a hard-fought 1-1 draw against neighbouring rivals, Lesotho women’s national football team in an entertaining encounter that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
South Africa suffered an early setback when Lesotho broke the deadlock in the 31st minute of the first half. After conceding first, Banyana Banyana refused to lose hope, regrouping quickly and pushing forward with intent. Their determination paid off just seven minutes later when Thorisho Mpelo found the back of the net in the 38th minute, bringing the home crowd to life.


The second half saw both teams go neck and neck, battling for dominance in midfield and creating opportunities in the final third. Banyana continued to press and registered several promising shots at goal but a were unable to convert their chances before the final whistle.
Speaking after the match, Coach Desiree Ellis said, “We didn’t start the way we wanted to. We aimed to move the ball quicker and with more purpose, but during the water break, we regrouped and corrected a few things, which led to the equaliser. In the second half, the changes we made, helped us build momentum and allowed the girls to express themselves better,” she said.

With the group stages wrapped up, the South African side has now set their sights on a crucial semi-final clash against Zimbabwe on Friday, as they continue their quest for tournament glory.
