Banyana Banyana Announce Squad for Lesotho Friendlies as WAFCON Preparations Begin

Banyana Banyana head coach Desiree Ellis has named her squad for South Africa’s upcoming two friendly matches against Lesotho at the University of Johannesburg. The Sasol-sponsored South African senior women’s national team returns to action for the first time this year after concluding 2024 with two away friendlies against Jamaica at Catherine Hall Stadium in Montego Bay last December.

These fixtures form part of Banyana Banyana’s preparations for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), set to take place in Morocco from 5–26 July, where the reigning champions will look to defend their continental crown. The team welcomes Lesotho for the first match on 22 February 2025, before facing them again a few days later on 25 February 2025. The squad will convene for a nine-day training camp from 17–26 February 2025 as Coach Ellis and her technical team continue to fine-tune their plans.

Nozipho Mbatha, Senior Manager, Group Brand and Sponsorships, congratulated the selected squad, saying:

“Sasol proudly congratulates the newly announced Banyana Banyana squad set to face Lesotho in these friendly matches. As our reigning WAFCON champions prepare to defend their title, we commend Coach Desiree Ellis and her technical team for their commitment to growing the game by broadening the player pool and introducing fresh talent.

To all the players, both new and experienced, we wish you the very best. This team continues to live the impossible on and off the field, and we do not doubt that you will bring the same passion, resilience, and excellence to these encounters. Sasol will be behind you, South Africa will be behind you—go out there and shine.”

Banyana Banyana will use these matches to sharpen their squad ahead of their title defence in Morocco, ensuring they are in peak condition for the continental showdown. South Africans are encouraged to show their support and rally behind the team as they embark on their journey towards WAFCON 2025.
