The South African U23 wheelchair basketball team made a commanding start to their IWBF Africa U23 Men’s African Championship, overpowering Egypt 47-34 in their first match of the tournament.
The Egyptian side came out firing, scoring first and putting early pressure on the South African team in the opening minutes. However, the young South Africans showed remarkable composure and resilience, steadily finding their rhythm and sinking crucial shots that electrified the crowd. The thrilling back-and-forth action had fans on their feet, cheering for their favourite teams in an electric atmosphere.

Speaking about the team’s impressive performance, Sasol Manager Group Brand and Sponsorships Dean Somerset expressed excitement about the energy on the court, saying “The passion and determination we saw today demonstrated that this team has what it takes to go all the way. The intensity of the game had the crowd fully engaged, and this is just the beginning of what promises to be an incredible tournament.”
With momentum on their side, the South African U23 team will now set their sights on their next challenge, a crucial clash against Libya on Saturday, 08 February. The match is scheduled to kick off at 13:00, at the Mandeville Sports Club in Johannesburg.
