Sasol Banyana Banyana claim winning start to COSAFA Cup campaign in Polokwane

Banyana Banyana opened their COSAFA Cup campaign on a winning note with a hard-fought victory over Malawi in Polokwane. The South Africans started the match on the back foot, but gradually found their rhythm, picking up momentum and thrilling the home supporters at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium. The breakthrough came in the 63rd minute when Sibulele Holweni found the back of the net, giving Banyana Banyana the lead.

The result was sealed in dramatic fashion right at the death, with Bonolo Mokoma striking in the 90th minute to secure all three points. Nthabiseng Majiya walked away with the Player of the Match accolade, while Casey Gordon, Sinegugu Zondi, and Khutso Pila celebrated memorable milestones, earning their first cap in the Senior Women’s National Team.

While the team showed resilience and determination throughout the match, head coach Desiree Ellis believes there is even more to come from her side. Reflecting on the performance, Ellis said “The results were good for us and it gives the team a bit of momentum going forward, we struggled a bit in the first half, but there were some really good moments. At halftime we spoke about rectifying our mistakes and making better decisions in key areas, and I think the players responded well in the second half.”

Speaking after the match, Dean Somerset, Manager: Group Brand and Sponsorships at Sasol, said, “We are happy with the level of performance the players showed today. They have been training hard and their focus and commitment were evident on the field. Congratulations to the players who have earned their first call-up to the Banyana Banyana team. This milestone is a testament to your hard work, talent and dedication and we wish you every success as you embark on this exciting new chapter.”
